Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs out there. Each child is different, so there is no right or wrong way to parent. Parenting can come along with a lot of unknowns, which can be difficult to navigate. Even if you have more than one child, you will still be faced with new situations. There can be a sense of pressure when you are a parent, to ensure your child or children’s needs are being met and that you are supporting them to be able to have a healthy and successful life, whatever that might look like for your family.

Parenting Types

There are four main types of parenting:

  1. Authoritarian
  2. Permissive
  3. Athourative
  4. Uninvolved

Authoritarian parents tend to focus on obedience, discipline and control. Permissive parents are usually characterized by high responsiveness and low demandingness. These parents are very responsive to their child's emotional needs. Authoritative parents are nurturing, supportive, and responsive, but also set firm limits and boundaries with their child. Uninvolved parenting is categorized by low responsiveness and low demandingness. Our therapists here at Wholesome can help you better understand what parenting type you are, which can help you have a better understanding of your parenting situation and any issues you may be facing.

Parenting Issues

Because each child and situation is unique, it is not uncommon for parents to run into issues. These issues can cause great amounts of stress. Here are few examples of parenting issues and stress to look out for:

  • Feeling like you aren't doing enough
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Not knowing how to deal with behavioral issues
  • Uncontrollable children
  • Feeling overwhelmed or run down
  • Emotional detachment
  • Fears of your child
  • Shared parenting

It is important to recognize when you may be faced with a parenting issue, as intervention can prevent strains in relationships and can allow you to maintain a healthy balance between you and your child. Our therapists can help you work through these challenges in a collaborative manner, so that you can get back to enjoying life with your child.
