Group therapy is a powerful and transformative experience for many individuals seeking connection, support, and healing. At Wholesome Psychology, we offer evidence-informed group therapy in both Edmonton and St. Albert, designed to help you feel less alone and more empowered in your mental health journey. Whether you're navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or life transitions, our group therapy sessions offer a safe and supportive environment to grow, reflect, and heal—together.

Why Choose Group Therapy?

While individual therapy offers one-on-one attention, group therapy brings a unique richness that stems from shared experience. It can feel daunting to open up in front of others at first, but many participants find that the group dynamic leads to accelerated growth, greater empathy, and a strong sense of community.

Key Benefits of Group Therapy

  • Shared Understanding: Being with others who are working through similar issues helps reduce feelings of isolation and shame.
  • Diverse Perspectives: Hearing others’ stories helps you see your own experiences in a new light.
  • Built-In Accountability: Regular group meetings foster consistency and motivation in your therapeutic journey.
  • Empathy and Feedback: Participants give and receive supportive, respectful feedback that deepens self-awareness.
  • Affordable Option: Group therapy is often more cost-effective than individual sessions, making support more accessible.

Types of Group Therapy We Offer

At Wholesome Psychology, we facilitate a range of group therapy options designed to address specific themes or needs. Our offerings may include:

  • Grief Support Groups – For individuals coping with loss and seeking compassionate understanding.
  • DBT Skills Groups – Ideal for those wanting to build emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.
  • Teen Support Groups – A supportive space for adolescents to explore identity, stress, and peer dynamics.
  • Mindfulness-Based Groups – Focused on present-moment awareness to manage anxiety and promote calm.
  • Women’s Mental Wellness Groups – Addressing self-worth, stress, and empowerment in a nurturing environment.

Group availability may vary based on interest and demand. We encourage you to check back regularly or contact us to inquire about upcoming options.

Is Group Therapy Right for You?

Many people are unsure whether group therapy is a good fit. Common questions include: Will I have to speak? Will others judge me? What if I cry? These are natural concerns. We want to assure you that our groups are led by licensed, compassionate therapists who foster a warm, confidential, and respectful atmosphere where you set your own pace.

Group therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel isolated and want to connect with others
  • Are working through a shared concern (e.g., anxiety, grief)
  • Want affordable, ongoing mental health support
  • Are ready to give and receive feedback in a supportive space

If you're unsure, we're happy to help you explore your options through a free 15-minute consultation or intake session. Learn more about our fees and process here.

What to Expect in Group Therapy

Our group sessions are typically 60–90 minutes long and include 6 to 10 participants. Each group is facilitated by one of our registered psychologists or therapists and may include a mix of guided discussion, skill-building exercises, and reflective activities. Some groups are open (ongoing enrollment) and others are closed (fixed number of sessions).

Here’s what you can expect from the group therapy experience:

  • Confidentiality: What’s shared in the group stays in the group.
  • Respect: We create space for every voice to be heard.
  • Growth: Group dynamics naturally support personal insight and transformation.

To join a group, we’ll first schedule a brief intake conversation to ensure it’s the right fit for your goals. From there, you’ll receive all the information you need to participate confidently.
