What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a compassionate, client-centered counseling approach designed to strengthen personal motivation for change. Originally developed to help individuals struggling with addiction, MI is now widely used to address various mental and physical health conditions. At its core, MI is a collaborative process where therapists use specific techniques, such as reflective listening, shared decision-making, and motivational interviewing strategies, to guide clients toward discovering their own reasons and motivation for change. By connecting the purpose of change to clients' deeply held values and beliefs, MI empowers them to take meaningful steps toward personal transformation.
How Does Motivational Interviewing Work?
During a session of Motivational Interviewing, your therapist will work with you as a partner in the process of change, recognizing that you are the expert on your own life. The goal is to foster a space where you feel heard and respected while exploring your personal motivation to make positive changes. MI emphasizes honoring your autonomy, encouraging self-reflection, and activating your intrinsic motivation to address areas of ambivalence or uncertainty in your life.
MI is structured around five stages of change, each representing a different level of readiness to make a change. These stages are:
- Precontemplation: In this stage, individuals may not recognize or acknowledge the need for change, and may not yet be ready to seek help.
- Contemplation: Here, individuals begin to consider change and may benefit from the support of MI to help clarify their motivation.
- Preparation: Individuals at this stage are making plans for change and may work with their therapist to set collaborative, achievable goals.
- Action: This stage involves active efforts to make changes, such as attending support groups or engaging in healthier behaviors.
- Maintenance: Individuals in this stage are focused on maintaining positive changes over time, often with less need for ongoing therapeutic support.
